Miniature scroll
Project for Book Design Course
I was inspired by Eastern Oriental scrolls but also wanted to incorporate photography as a visual element. I selected out-of-focus and blurry photographs to evoke a sense of atmosphere and motion, enhancing the overall mood of the scroll. To represent the changing seasons, I used color transitions and complemented them with traditional Chinese poetry. The poems were carefully chosen from the Tang and Song dynasties, both renowned for their rich literary heritage. I arranged the poems to follow the cycle of Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring, handwriting each one before digitally merging them with the photographs.
A Random Memory:
Back in sixth grade, my elementary school took us to an immersive exhibition of Along the River During the Qingming Festival. The scroll had been brought to life—its elements animated and moving—turning the traditional painting into a dynamic experience. It was such a unique and memorable way to engage with a historical artwork.
I even found a video that gives a glimpse of what it looked like.
Photographs used
These are the photographs featured in the scroll. All were taken by me—all on film. The gentle blur and warm tones work beautifully together to create a soft and timeless mood.
